All about branched-chain amino acids (BCAA)




Proteins are essential nutrients that form the building blocks of humans. The thousands of proteins in the human body are all made from combinations of 20 different amino acids. They are all essential for various metabolic processes that go on in the body. The human body can prepare certain proteins; hence, they are known as non-essential amino acids. On the other hand, essential amino acids cannot be produced by the human body and must thus be ingested through food.

Leucine, isoleucine, and valine are all types of BCAA. Protein-rich foods, such as eggs, meat, and milk, include branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which have a unique chemical structure. In addition, they are a popular powdered dietary supplement.

BCAAs have been shown to provide several advantages.

Enhance Muscle Development

Increased muscle mass is one of the most common benefits.

Leucine, one of the branched-chain amino acids, promotes muscle protein synthesis, the process by which muscle is built.

According to research, people who performed resistance training after a drink containing 5.6 grams of branched-chain amino acids showed a 22% higher increase in muscle protein synthesis than those who drank a placebo drink.

In other studies, a whey protein drink containing an equivalent dose of branched-chain amino acids increased muscle protein synthesis by roughly 50%. However, this is less than half of what was reported. All the amino acids necessary for muscular growth are found in whey protein. Since the other essential amino acids, such as whey protein or other complete protein sources, are required for branched-chain amino acids to affect muscle protein synthesis fully, they are necessary but not sufficient.

Improve Recovery Time and Reduce Muscle Soreness

According to certain studies, branched-chain amino acids have been linked to a reduction in post-workout muscular pain. Soreness is usual after a workout, especially in the initial stages of training.

Muscle soreness that occurs 12 to 24 hours after exercise and lasts up to 72 hours is known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

Researchers believe that small rips in muscles are to blame when determining the specific aetiology of DOMS.

Taking branched-chain amino acids has been demonstrated to lessen muscle damage, hence the duration and intensity of DOMS.

Several studies have shown branched-chain amino acids to reduce protein breakdown and creatine kinase levels, which are indicators of muscle injury. In one research, people who took branched-chain amino acids before squats had less DOMS and less muscular exhaustion than those who took a placebo.

Reduce the Effects of Exercising

When it comes to muscular soreness after exercise, branched-chain amino acids may be able to alleviate that discomfort.

After a strenuous workout session, it is natural to get tired. But, how soon you tire depends on several things, including the intensity and length of your exercise, the weather, and your nutritional and physical status. When you exercise, your muscles utilise branched-chain amino acids, which lowers your blood’s amount of branched-chain amino acids. The next step is the release of serotonin. Tryptophan is converted to serotonin in the brain, which is a factor in the onset of exhaustion experienced by athletes.

It is hypothesised that the fatigue-reducing impact of branched-chain amino acids was responsible for participants’ attention boost during an exercise in two experiments.

Avert Muscle Wastage

The breakdown and re-synthesis of muscle proteins is a continual process. The quantity of protein in muscles is determined by the ratio of muscle protein breakdown to muscle protein synthesis.

When protein breakdown outpaces muscular protein synthesis, muscle atrophy happens, which results in muscle loss, a symptom of malnutrition. It can occur due to several conditions, such as chronic illness, cancer, fasting, or the ageing process. Branched-chain amino acids make up a third of the necessary amino acids in muscle proteins in humans. They make about 40% of the entire amount of amino acids your body needs.

Since muscle wasting can occur at any time, the branched-chain amino acids and other vital amino acids must be replenished to slow or stop the process altogether.

The usage of BCAA supplements to slow down muscle protein breakdown has been shown in several trials to be effective. Certain groups, such as the elderly and those suffering from debilitating conditions like cancer, may see an improvement in their health and well-being.
